Head of US Secret Service resigns after assassination attempt on Trump

Director of the US Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, has resigned after attempting to assassinate Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump at a campaign rally.

This was reported by the Reuters agency on Tuesday, July 23, with reference to the statement of the White House.

The Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting incumbent and former US presidents, has come under fire after a gunman was able to shoot Donald Trump from a rooftop overlooking an outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

"The independent review to get to the bottom of what happened on July 13 is ongoing, and I look forward to evaluating its findings. We all know that what happened that day will never happen again," said the statement of Democratic President Joe Biden.

Cheatle declined to answer questions from lawmakers about the security plan for the rally and how law enforcement responded to the gunman's suspicious behavior during a House Oversight Committee hearing. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said a full review of security failures will be conducted to prevent them in the future.

Cheatle, who has led the Secret Service since 2022, told lawmakers she took responsibility for the shooting, calling it the agency's biggest failure since then-President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on July 14, during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, Donald Trump was shot while he was on stage.

One of the spectators was killed during the shooting. The shooter was eliminated.
