3,800 released prisoners, who signed a contract with the AFU, serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Secretary of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence, Roman Kostenko, reported this in a comment to Ukrainian Pravda on Tuesday, July 23.
According to him, the number of prisoners willing to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine is currently decreasing, as the majority of volunteers have already gone to the front.
"3,800 prisoners are already in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Most of them have recently completed their training. But there are already wounded and killed among them," Kostenko said.
According to the secretary of the Committee, it is necessary to create opportunities for the mobilization of convicts from pre-trial detention centers, which will allow to replenish the army. Kostenko noted that it may be possible to mobilize about 5,000 prisoners to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on May 14, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, signed a law by which the parliament allowed the use of parole for convicts for their military service under a contract during martial law.
In May, the Khmelnytskyi court allowed 50 convicts to mobilize for the war.
As of May 21, more than 3,000 convicts have already submitted applications for parole from serving their sentences for direct participation in the defense of Ukraine.
