Kuleba says decision on AFU permission to destroy russian bombers with Western weapons being prepared

Ukraine will eventually receive permission to use weapons provided by Western partners to attack russian bombers. This will make it possible to hit enemy aircraft at airfields in russia, preventing their attacks on Ukrainian cities using guided aerial bombs.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba has stated this in an interview to ELTA Zoom.

He noted that in order to change the situation at the front and in the context of airstrikes by the occupiers on the territory of Ukraine, it is necessary to make many decisions and take into account many components.

"Some of them depend on us and we make those decisions. Some decisions are made by our partners and they also tend to understand that these decisions need to be made," Kuleba said.

First of all, Kuleba spoke about the permission to use Western weapons outside the borders of Ukraine against russian military facilities.

"But if I had to name two main decisions that must be made to reverse the trend you mention, I would name the destruction of russian bombers at airfields and in the air. This is a real sore spot for our Ground Forces," the Foreign Minister emphasized.

In addition, the Minister noted the importance of a sufficient number of artillery shells and the need to quickly deliver them to Ukrainian defenders.

"As for the decisions that will allow us to destroy the russian bombers, they are already being prepared. So, we are working on it. I am sure that these decisions will be made," Kuleba said, adding that it is "only a matter of time."

"Because the threat from these bombers is immeasurably great. We cannot intercept a guided bomb just in the air. So, the only way to avoid this is to destroy the bomber. We can do this by hitting planes on airfields or shooting down planes in the air," he said.

Therefore, Kuleba summarized, Ukraine needs long-range missiles to "reach the airfields, or a sufficient number of air defense systems and interceptors so that these planes can be shot down from the air."

"Sooner or later it will happen. We ask our partners to make it happen sooner rather than later," the official added.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the Defense Forces of Ukraine received permission from the U.S. to use American weapons to destroy threats "anywhere" in the border area, not only in the Kharkiv Region, Politico reported with reference to U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.
