Construction of two new power units has begun at the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant (Khmelnytskyi NPP, Netishyn, Khmelnytskyi Region).
This follows from a statement by the Ministry of Energy, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"Within the framework of Ukrainian-American cooperation, which is strategically important for the strengthening of Ukraine's energy independence, preparations for the construction of Khmelnytskyi NPP-5 and Khmelnytskyi NPP-6 power units using Westinghouse AR1000 technology are beginning at Khmelnytskyi NPP. The other day, preparatory work for the construction of cooling towers of future power units began at the construction site of the station," the message says.
Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko emphasized that AR 1000 is the most modern technology, an important feature of which is the ability to maneuver.
"A special feature of the American AR 1000 technology is the ability to maneuver blocks. Today, the enemy strikes and precisely destroys the balancing power of Ukrainian energy, so the construction of blocks with the ability to maneuver is very important for us. And this is our answer to terrorists; they will never deprive us of light, but new technologies will enable us to survive," the minister said.
The head of the Energoatom national nuclear power generating company, Petro Kotin, said that after the completion of the construction of new power units at the Khmelnytskyi NPP, the plant's capacity will exceed even the capacity of the russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP, which is currently the largest in Europe.
"Khmelnytskyi NPP Power Unit 5 will be the first nuclear power unit in Europe, built according to the American AR 1000 technology. It is very important to modernize the Ukrainian nuclear power industry, in particular, in view of the reduction of heat and hydro generation in the country, caused by the destruction caused by russian missile attacks," he emphasized.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Energoatom expects that 2 AP 1000 power units, which will be built at the Khmelnytskyi NPP jointly with the American Westinghouse, will be put into operation in 2027-2029.
Khmelnytskyi NPP operates two power units (VVER-1000) with a total capacity of 2,000 MW (connected in 1987 and 2004).
