Current account deficit worsens to USD 2.2 billion in August

The deficit of the current account of the balance of payments amounted to USD 2.2 billion (in August 2022, the surplus was USD 1.9 billion).

This follows from the NBU’s data, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

The formation of the deficit was due to the expansion of the negative balance of foreign trade (both due to a decrease in export volumes and an increase in imports) in the absence of grant assistance from international partners (in August of last year, its volume was USD 3.1 billion).

In the first eight months of 2023, the current account deficit was USD 4.8 billion (in the first eight months of 2022, the surplus was USD 6.2 billion).

Energy imports decreased by 36.9% (compared to July, increased by 8.4%) mainly due to a reduction in the import of petroleum products; non-energy increased by 33.6% (increased by 4.8% compared to July).

The deficit in trade in services almost halved to USD 608 million (compared to USD 1.1 billion in August 2022).

This led to a decrease in international reserves to USD 40.4 billion, which provides financing for imports in the future period of 5.4 months.
