Since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine last February, more than 200,000 Russian soldiers and more than 1,800 officers have been killed or wounded. This was stated by the commander of the NATO Joint Forces in Europe, General Christopher Cavoli, according to the material of the Spiegel publication.
Cavoli spoke as the guest of honor at a traditional lunch at Hamburg City Hall and declared that "the scale of this war is unbelievable."
According to him, Russia has already lost more than 2,000 tanks and on average the Russian army fire more than 23,000 artillery shells per day.
Cavoli said that after Russia's attack on Ukraine, NATO must adapt to the new reality.
"If somebody comes with a tank, you have to have a tank too. But one of the lessons of the Cold War is that the accuracy of weapons is what matters. Also, the production capacity of the defense industry is important. Whoever can produce the fastest wins the war," said the general.
At the same time, the NATO general emphasized the importance of civilian leadership: "We learned from this conflict that civilian leadership is absolutely necessary. It can mobilize a nation and inspire partners."
