Large-Scale Accident Occurs In Main Network In Odesa Region, Emergency Blackouts Applied In Odesa

Odesa region, emergency blackouts

On Saturday morning, an autotransformer failed at one of the high-voltage substations in the Odesa Region, through which the city of Odesa is being powered, because of this, emergency blackouts have been applied in Odesa and several areas adjacent to the regional center.

The speaker of the Odesa Regional Military Administration Serhii Bratchuk and the press service of Ukrenergo announced this on Telegram, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"Due to the accident and fire that arose this morning at the energy facility of NPC Ukrenergo, emergency power outages occur in the Odesa District and the city of Odesa. All services are involved to eliminate the consequences of the accident, rescue and recovery work is ongoing. Currently, the connection to electricity of the main critical infrastructure facilities (boiler houses, water stations, hospitals, etc.) continues," Bratchuk wrote.

In turn, Ukrenergo said that an autotransformer failed in the Odesa Region, which was restored after damage during Russian attacks.

"This morning, at one of the high-voltage substations through which Odesa is being powered, an autotransformer failed, which was restored after damage during Russian attacks. Because of this, the city and several districts adjacent to Odesa of the region have network restrictions, since it is impossible to deliver electricity to consumers in full. In Odesa , there are  emergency shutdowns. In most other districts of the region, there are no obstacles to the delivery of electricity to consumers," it said.

Ukrenergo noted that during the last few missile attacks, the enemy deliberately chose the high-voltage infrastructure of the Odesa Region as the target, trying to de-energize the region.

Because of this, all high-voltage substations in the region suffered significant damage.

"Repair crews of Ukrenergo restored the functionality of repeatedly damaged equipment that worked according to backup schemes. Because of this, network restrictions were in place for the city and some districts of the Odesa Region. Such a mode of operation, to which power engineers are forced to switch due to shelling, led to the failure of repeatedly damaged equipment," the company explained the cause of the accident.

It is noted that this time, due to the rather significant scale of the accident, energy supply restrictions will be longer.

It is currently not possible to determine the timing of when power supply will be fully restored.

Together with the Odesa Regional Military Administration and oblenergo, Ukrenergo specialists are developing backup schemes for powering Odesa and surrounding districts.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, as of 11:00 a.m. on February 3, the power deficit in the Ukrainian power system remained significant.

Network restrictions were maintained only in the Odesa Region.
