British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak during a phone call with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that his country will provide Ukraine with Challenger 2 tanks. This was announced by the official portal of the Office of the Prime Minister of Britain.
"The leaders reflected on the current state of Russia’s war in Ukraine, with successive Ukrainian victories pushing Russian troops back and compounding their military and morale issues. They agreed on the need to seize on this moment with an acceleration of global military and diplomatic support to Ukraine. The Prime Minister outlined the UK’s ambition to intensify our support to Ukraine, including through the provision of Challenger 2 tanks and additional artillery systems,” the British side said in a statement.
Sunak and Zelenskyy welcomed other international commitments in this vein, including Poland's offer to provide Ukraine with a company of Leopard tanks.
"The Prime Minister stressed that he and the whole UK Government would be working intensively with international partners to deliver rapidly the kind of support which will allow Ukraine to press their advantage, win this war and secure a lasting peace,” the statement said.
President Zelenskyy did not mention Challenger 2 tanks following the conversation, but noted that he thanks Sunak for the decisions that will strengthen the Armed Forces on the battlefield. On his Twitter page, the President noted that the UK's always strong support has now become impenetrable and ready for challenges.
"In a conversation with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, I thanked for decisions that will not only strengthen us on the battlefield, but also be the right signal for other partners," Zelenskyy added without other details.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak approved a plan to send 12 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine, the first units of armored vehicles should be transferred immediately.
