The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (Zaporizhzhia NPP) has been completely stopped, the Energoatom national nuclear power generating company reported on Telegram.
Today, September 11, at 03:41 a.m., power unit No. 6 of the Zaporizhzhia NPP was disconnected from the power grid. Preparations are underway for its cooldown and transfer to a cold state.
For the last three days, the 6th power unit worked in the island mode, feeding only the own needs of the power plant at a critically low power level (from 114 to 140 MW), since all the communication lines of the Zaporizhzhia NPP with the power system of Ukraine were damaged due to Russian shelling, Energoatom noted.
Last night, after the recovery of operability of one of these communication lines, the power supply of the own needs of the Zaporizhzhia NPP became possible from the power system of Ukraine. Consequently, it was decided to shut down power unit No. 6 and transfer it to the safest state - cold shutdown.
In case of repeated damage to the communication lines with the power system, the risk of which remains high, the auxiliary needs of the Zaporizhzhia NPP will be powered by diesel generators, the operating time of which is limited by the technological resource and the volumes of diesel fuel available.
The Energoatom national nuclear power generating company carries out all possible measures to organize the supply of additional shipments of diesel fuel to the Zaporizhzhia NPP.
"To prevent an emergency situation at the station, it is necessary to stop the shelling of the Zaporizhzhia NPP lines of communication with the power system and create a demilitarized zone around it. After that, it will be possible to repair the communication lines, ensure the inclusion and further safe operation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP," the Energoatom emphasized.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on September 1, the IAEA mission arrived at the Zaporizhzhia NPP led by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, in a few hours Grossi and most of the mission members left the territory of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, 6 observers remained at the station. Grossi gave the first comment after visiting the Zaporizhzhia NPP in Enerhodar - he noted that the permanent mission of the organization will function at the station.
On September 3, the IAEA reported that the Zaporizhzhia NPP was disconnected from the last main transmission line, electricity was supplied via the backup line, and one of the two power units that worked was again disconnected.
