On Friday, September 9, the Council of the EU adopted a decision that completely suspends the agreement on the simplification of the visa regime between the EU and Russia. The general rules of the visa code will apply to citizens of the Russian Federation. This is stated in the press service of the Council of the EU.
It is reported, the decision will come into effect on September 12, 2022. This will lead to an increase in the visa fee from EUR 35 to EUR 80, the need to provide additional documentary evidence, an increase in visa processing times and stricter rules for issuing multiple-entry visas.
"With its unprovoked and unjustified aggressive war, including indiscriminate attacks on the civilian population, Russia has violated this trust and disrespected the fundamental values of our international community. Today's decision is a direct consequence of Russia's actions and another proof of our steadfast commitment to Ukraine and its people," the minister of internal affairs of the Czech Republic Vit Rakusan said.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on August 5, the Embassy of Latvia in Russia announced the suspension of issuing visas to citizens of Russia.
On August 3, it became known that the President of Finland, Sauli Niinisto, intends to discuss with the country's parliament the introduction of visa restrictions for Russians.
On July 28, Estonia announced the suspension of issuing visas to citizens of the Russian Federation.
