Ukraine has opened the first honorary consulate in Azerbaijan in the city of Shamakhi.

The press service of the Ukrainian Embassy in Azerbaijan has said this in a statement, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"On October 27, at the premises of the Ukrainian Embassy in the Republic of Azerbaijan, a solemn ceremony was held on the occasion of the appointment of the Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Shamakhi," the statement reads.

An entrepreneur, a graduate of the Kyiv Institute of International Relations Mehrali Gasimov, who worked in various posts in international companies SAP and DeGolyer & MacNaughton Corporation, has been appointed Honorary Consul in Shamakhi.

The Ambassador of Ukraine to Azerbaijan Vladyslav Kanevskyi handed over a consular patent to Gasimov and presented a service certificate, the parties also signed an agreement on the functions and duties of the Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Shamakhi.

The statement notes that the opening of the first honorary consulate is evidence of the high dynamics of cooperation between the two countries and creates favorable conditions for the further expansion of trade, economic, cultural, humanitarian and regional ties between states.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on September 30, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, in connection with the aggravation of the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, stated that Ukraine supports the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, but called on Azerbaijan and Armenia to stop the bloodshed.
