International Reserves Down 0.2% To USD 18.4 Billion In February

In February, international reserves fell by 0.17% to USD 18.409 billion.

The NBU announced this in a statement, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The replenishment of international reserves during February was primarily due to interventions in the foreign exchange market.

The inflow of capital of non-residents, together with the increase in the proceeds of foreign exchange earnings from exporters against the background, with maintaining of favorable conditions on the world markets, positively influenced the supply of currency in the interbank market.

This allowed the National Bank to buy surplus currency from the market to replenish reserves.

As a result of February, the National Bank bought USD 426.9 million in the interbank market, including USD 222 million in interventions in the form of a request for a better rate.

Besides, the National Bank sold USD 30 million in interventions in the form of a request for a better rate.

Thus, the net purchase of currency by the National Bank amounted to USD 396.9 million.

Also in February, the reserves received USD 137.4 million from government placement of government loan bonds denominated in foreign currency.

At the same time, in February, payments of the government and the National Bank on state debt in foreign currency were made in the amount of USD 536.8 million.

In particular, USD 465.9 million was paid in favor of the International Monetary Fund.

Another USD 70.9 million was spent on servicing and repaying the public debt in foreign currency, of them USD 16 million was for servicing of government loan bonds in foreign currency.

Totally, as at March 1, 2018, the volume of international reserves covers 3.5 months of future imports and is sufficient to fulfill Ukraine's obligations and current operations of the government and the National Bank.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in 2017 international reserves grew by 21% to USD 18.8 billion.
