Naftogaz: Government Of Germany To Make Final Decision On Construction Of Nord Stream-2 In March

The government of Germany is planning to make a final decision on construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline in March 2018.

The Naftogaz of Ukraine national energy company's Board Chairman Andrii Kobolev said this during a roundtable, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

Kobolev urged the Ukrainian parliament to form as soon as possible criteria of selection of partners for joint management of the Ukrainian gas transportation system.

"We urgently need a voice of a foreign partner in Europe who would help us promote gas transit through Ukraine," he said.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in December 2017, Andrii Kobolev said the company's main task for 2018 was to stop construction of the Nord Stream-2 Russian gas pipeline project by way of revamping the gas transmission system (GTS) of Ukraine.

The European Commission approved a proposal to extend the requirements of its Third Gas Directive 2009/73 (the Directive 2009/73/EC on common rules for the internal market of natural gas) to all gas pipelines from third countries, including Russia's proposed Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, in November.

The European Commission decided to include maritime segments of pipelines on the list of objects regulated by these rules.

Previously, they applied only to land routes.

The European Commission is insisting that the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project cannot be implemented in a legal vacuum or only in accordance with the laws of a third country.

If the gas pipeline is to be built, it will need a legal framework that takes the key principles of the rules of the European Union's energy market into account.

In addition, according to the relevant decision, the European Union continues to support transit of Russian gas through Ukraine.
