National Guard Withdraws Guards From Shevchenkivskyi District Court Of Kyiv Without Explanation

The National Guard has withdrawn guards from the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv without explanation.

The court's management announced this in a statement, which the High Council of Justice's head Ihor Benedysiuk read at an emergency meeting, the Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"The National Guard soldiers that were guarding the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv left the premises of the court at around 9:30 a.m. on February 19, 2018, without providing reasons of their action. The Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv has thus been left unprotected," he said.

According to the management of the court, the court's premises remain unprotected, and there are threats to the safety of both judges and case materials.

There is no explanation for this action from the leadership of the National Guard or the Ministry of Interior Affairs.

The court is calling on the High Council of Justice to investigate this situation immediately.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Minister of Interior Affairs Arsen Avakov called on the Cabinet of Ministers to abolish the protection of courts by the police and the National Guard at about 11:20 a.m. on Monday.

He expressed outrage at the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv's refusal to order arrest of a former fighter with the Donbas battalion, who is suspected of injuring a policeman with a firearm during riots near the Solomianskyi District Court of Kyiv on February 15.
