Ukraine agrees to prolong a transitional period before the language norms of the new Education Law take effect until 2023.

The Ministry of Education of Ukraine has said this in a statement following a meeting between Minister of Education Liliya Hrynevych and Ambassador of Romania Cristian-Leon Turcanu, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"The Ministry of Education took full account of the recommendations issued by the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) concerning the language norms in the new Education Law and agreed to extend a transitional period until 2023," the statement from the ministry read.

Before the recommendation of the Venice Commission, the law envisaged the implementation of the language norms in 2020.

Currently Ukraine is preparing a step-by-step roadmap for the implementation of the language norms.

According to the report, in 2018, Ukraine and Romania plan to sign a protocol of cooperation in the field of education at the level of ministries.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Venice Commission recommended Ukraine increase a transitional period before the implementation of the language norms.
