EU-Delegation: New Program Of Macrofinance Assistance Of EU Impossible Before Continuation Of IMF's EFF Program

A new program of macrofinance assistance by the European Union to Ukraine is impossible before continuation of crediting by the International Monetary Fund.

The Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine said this to Ukrainian News Agency.

According to the Delegation, the European Union is studying whether Ukraine needs this program.

The European Commission assesses the economic situation in Ukraine, Ukraine's needs in foreign finance, the progress of Ukraine in key reforms, including in fighting corruption.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the revision of the cooperation program between Ukraine and the International Monetary Fund is expected in May 2018.

The National Bank of Ukraine expects one tranche from the International Monetary Fund in 2018 for USD 2 billion.

The IMF has already said that continuation of its cooperation with Ukraine required adoption of a law on privatization, establish an anti-corruption court, resolve the issue of gas prices, and implement land reform.

In December 2017, the European Commission refused to provide EUR 600 million to Ukraine as the third tranche of its Macro-Financial Assistance to the country.

The European Union earlier said that the lifting of the moratorium on timber exports by Ukraine was one of the conditions for disbursement of EUR 600 million to Ukraine as the second tranche of its macro-financial assistance.

At a meeting between European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko in the margins of the Eastern Partnership Summit, which took place in Brussels on 24 November 2017, President Poroshenko expressed an interest in further Macro-Financial Assistance from the EU in the size of EUR 1.8 billion.

President Juncker expressed his openness in this regard. From Ukraine's side, reinforcing the reform momentum and resisting internal pressures for policy reversals on important reforms will be crucial, particularly over the coming months.
