Militants have freed Ukrainian soldier Roman Savkov from captivity.

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko announced this on his Facebook page, the Ukrainian News Agency reports.

Poroshenko added that he has ordered performance of the necessary medical examination and treatment of the soldier.

First Deputy Parliament Speaker Iryna Heraschenko, who is Ukraine's representative in the humanitarian affairs subgroup of the Trilateral Contact Group on resolution of the conflict in the Donbas (Ukraine, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and Russia), wrote on Facebook that Savkov was still in a state of shock.

The soldier was wounded when militants captured him.

He was detained in a prison in Makiivka and denied medicine despite the fact that he has diabetes.

Savkov's health deteriorated significantly during his time in captivity.

He will undergo medical treatment at a military hospital.

Savkov is currently being transported to Kyiv. He will be able to meet with his relatives on Thursday.

Heraschenko expressed the hope that the remaining military servicemen illegally detained by militants would be released soon.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Poroshenko recently pardoned a woman convicted of a serious crime to facilitate a future exchange of prisoners.
