Deputy Minister for Temporary Occupied Territories and Internally Displaced Persons Heorhii Tuka says the situation with HIV and tuberculosis in the non-controlled territories of Donbas is worsening and is close to critical.

He announced this at a press conference, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"According to information of the United Nations Organizations, the situation with tuberculosis and HIV in the non-controlled territories of Donbas is coming to the line of the critical situation. It is early to speak about epidemics, but the situation is alarming very much," he said.

He added that with the help from the United Nations (UNICEF) over 8,000 patients were provided with medications for HIV in 2017 and 500 patients got medications for tuberculosis.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Acting Minister of Health Uliyana Suprun announced in July 2017 that the Secretariat of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria had approved extension of funding for Ukraine under programs for combating HIV and tuberculosis until 2021.
