Former member of the Verkhovna Rada from the Batkivshchyna All-Ukrainian Association political party / former acting deputy chairperson of the Presidential Administration Andrii Senchenko has stated that Mayor of Kyiv / Chairperson of the Kyiv City State Administration Vitalii Klitschko blocked replacement of chairperson of the Council of Ministers in the Crimea in late February 2014 just days before full Russian occupation.

Senchenko said this as he testified in court under the case against former President Viktor Yanukovych charged with high treason, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

According to Senchenko, in late February 2014, after Yanukovych fled the country, there was a meeting held among the leaders of the political parties Batkivshchyna, People's Front, Svoboda and UDAR.

All party leaders but Klitschko (leader of the UDAR political party) supported an initiative to immediately replace Prime Minister of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea in the face of the looming Russian military occupation.

"Klitschko was at loggerhead with the rest of the group refusing to sign the decision before we've covered all other conditions and threatened that if we sign the replacement he would pull out from the coalition agreement," Senchenko testified.

Former MP considers that quick change of leadership in Crimea could have prevented the Russian annexation of the peninsula.

"On February 26, 2014 we had this narrow window of opportunity to change the power in Crimea," Senchenko said stressing that on February 27 when Russian militaries took over the Supreme Council was already late as the annexation began.

In his testimonies, Senchenko also stated that at the same meeting of the coalition on February 23, 2014, former prime minister / Leader of the People's Front party Arseniy Yatsenyuk blocked another initiative on creation of a headquarters to control the situation in Donbas.

Senchenko also mentioned his role in February-March, 2014 in the process of freeing Ukrainian citizens taken hostage of by Russian militaries in Crimea.

He scored to his credit liberation of Commander of the Ukrainian Naval Forces Serhii Haiduk and other 17 Ukrainians who were exchanged for Russian colonel of the Main Intelligence Department Roman Filatov.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on Thursday, the court started taking witness statements from Senchenko under the high treason Yanukovych case.
