Cabinet Introduces Biometric Verification Of Ukrainians, Foreigners Starting 2018

Starting January 1, 2018, the Cabinet of Ministers launched a system of biometric identification and verification of citizens of Ukraine, foreign citizens and individuals without particular citizenship.

The Ukrainian News Agency learnt this from the Cabinet's decision.

The Cabinet also approved a respective provision On National System of Biometric Verification and Identification of Citizens of Ukraine, Foreign Citizens or People Without Citizenship.

The State Migration Service was appointed as a governing authority responsible for functioning of the system.

Biometric data (fingerprints and face image saved in digital form) must be taken by designated state services and fed into a database.

Biometric identification of a person is carried out based on the following data: full name, date of birth, gender, place of birth, passport, biometric data, foreign travel records and other relevant information.

Access to the database will be provided to authorized individuals from state bodies, officials who must use a digital signature.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on August 30, President Petro Poroshenko ordered the Cabinet of Ministers to ensure functioning of the National System of Biometric Verification starting January 1, 2018.
