Armed Reserves Put On Standby Due To Escalated Tension In Donbas

Donbas, militants, armed forces, operational readiness

The Armed Forces of Ukraine has ordered an operational readiness to the armed reserves given the escalated tension in the militant-held Donbas.

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Defense for matters of Antiterrorist Operation (ATO) Andrii Lysenko said this at a briefing, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"To preclude questions about raising the readiness of our armed forces, I would like to say that the level of readiness is constantly high and our military are constantly on the alert, ready to fend off an offensive, etc. In addition, we have placed on the alert our reserves and ordered an operation readiness to forces positioned in the disengagement areas, which, under the Minsk Agreements, are monitored by the Special Monitoring Mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe," Lysenko said.

Lysenko stressed that in case of further escalation of the situation, the Antiterrorist Operation's forces will be ready to put up a defense to prevent pushing the enemy deeper into the government-controlled area.

Lysenko also said that the escalated tension in Luhansk and surrounding areas drew attention of western partners of Ukraine and is being closely monitored by reconnaissance forces.

The official also confirmed that Russia had recently transferred additional technical backup to militants in Donbas.

"There were columns of military hardware with personnel and infantry fighting vehicles entering into the territory of Ukraine. Information about tanks transferred by Russia was not confirmed," the official said.

Lysenko confirmed there was large number of military hardware concentrated near Luhansk, but said the militants were lacking drivers and mechanics to employ the technical equipment to its full potential.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on Tuesday, November 22, President Petro Poroshenko held an extraordinary meeting of the National Security and Defense Council due to the escalated tension in Donbas.
