EU Expecting Quashing Russia's Ban On Mejlis In Crimea

The European Union expects the Russian Federation to quash a ban of the Crimean Tatars' Mejlis in the annexed by Russia Crimea.

A EU spokesperson said this in a statement welcoming release from custody Deputy Chairpersons of Mejlis of Crimean Tatars Ilmi Umerov and Ahtem Ciygoz, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

According to the report, indictment of Ilmi Umerov and Ahtem Ciygoz in September violated international law on human rights.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, President Petro Poroshenko thanked President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Erdogan for his efforts to free Ciygoz and Umerov.

On October 25, criminal prosecution was stopped against Ciygoz and Umerov, and they were transferred to Turkey, following negotiations between President of Russia Vladimir Putin and President of Turkey Recep Erdogan.
