Court Dismisses Yanukovych's Government Attorney Herasko For Lack Of Professionalism

The Obolonskyi District Court of Kyiv has dismissed former president Viktor Yanukovych's government attorney Maksym Herasko for inability to defend his client.

Judge Vladyslav Deviatko announced this, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"During the court hearing the attorney showed lack of professionalism and absence of proper qualification to provide legal assistance in this extremely complicated criminal case," he said.

The court decided to replace the attorney immediately.

The court obliged the Free Legal Aid Center to appoint a new attorney for Yanukovych and provide appearance of a new attorney at the next sitting of the court on October 26 at 10 a.m.

Maksym Herasko said the decision was unfounded.

"The court does not want to see an attorney here. The court wants to see a dummy here. I agree with the position of my client that this is an unfair trial," he said.

Herasko said the court decision would be overturned by an appeal court.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on July 5, Yanukovych fired his private lawyers Vitalii Serdiuk and Ihor Fedorenko.

On July 6, the Obolonskyi District Court of Kyiv ruled a free of charge lawyer must be assigned to him.

The Kyiv Regional Center on Provision of Free Legal Aid appointed Vitalii Meshechek to defend Yanukovych in court.

On August 17, Meshechek stated that he recused himself from the case.
