The Transparency International anti-corruption and for human rights organization (TI) considers that after adoption of a judicial reform President Petro Poroshenko has lost an exception power over the courts.
TI Executive Director in Ukraine Yaroslav Yurchyshyn told the Ukrainian News in an interview, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
"I Poroshenko had the power to influence courts, then it is very unlikely that he would have allowed names of those who had sent to prison Lutsenko [current Prosecutor General], godfather of daughter of a close friend of President, to filter through in the list of candidates to new Supreme Court. That those names appeared evidences that Poroshenko does not have direct influence over the courts. His power has been curtailed to merely formal signatory function," Yurchyshyn said.
At the same time, Yurchyshyn noted Poroshenko could and should exercise his legal power not to sign some questionable appointments of judges.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the High Council of Public Justice recommended 111 names of the 120 shortlisted candidates to President Petro Poroshenko for appointment to positions of judges in new Supreme Court.
