President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has met with newly elected PACE President Stella Kyriakides in Strasbourg, France.

Poroshenko's spokesman Sviatoslav Tseholko announced this on Twitter, the Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The press service of President Poroshenko reports that he congratulated Stella Kyriakides on having been elected to this important post.

The President of Ukraine expressed confidence that PACE would further support our common struggle for the restoration of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

"In this context, the Head of State expressed belief that PACE would further adhere to its principled position as regards the impossibility of Russia's return to full-fledged work in the Assembly without full compliance with all the requirements and principles advocated by the Council of Europe," reads the statement.

President Poroshenko informed on the course of reforms in Ukraine and PACE President Kyriakides praised the success of the reforms.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on October 10, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe elected Stella Kyriakides (Cyprus, EPP/CD) the President.

The new president of the PACE has been elected for three months as the next elections will be in January 2018 (the next session will be January 22-26, 2018).

The Ukrainian delegation supported another candidate.

On October 6, Pedro Agramunt resigned as the president of Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

The European People's Party group in PACE expressed lack of confidence in Agramunt on June 26.

According to media reports, a delegation made up of members of PACE and the State Duma of Russia led by PACE President Agramunt made an unauthorized visit to Syria on March 20.
