Poroshenko To Ask Rada To Appoint Smolii As NBU Governor

NBU, President, Petro Poroshenko, governor, Yakiv Smolii

President Petro Poroshenko intends to ask the parliament to appoint the National Bank of Ukraine's first deputy governor Yakiv Smolii as the governor of the bank.

Several sources in government agencies disclosed this to Ukrainian News Agency.

"Raiffeisen Bank Aval's Board Chairman Volodymyr Lavrenchuk, who is second candidate and even the favorite in certain quarters, will not win sufficient votes in the parliament while Smolii will," a source said.

The sources expect Smolii to be appointed in October.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Valeriya Hontareva announced her resignation from the post of governor of the National Bank of Ukraine on April 10 and submitted her letter of resignation to Poroshenko.

The National Bank of Ukraine announced in September that Hontareva would go on an unpaid leave until approval of her resignation letter by the parliament.
