Amnesty International Accuses Ukraine Of Involvement Arms Supplies To South Sudan

Amnesty International, an international human rights organization, has accused Ukraine of involvement in supply of arms to South Sudan.

Amnesty International Ukraine announced this in a statement on Facebook, the Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"A new Amnesty report provides evidence of Ukraine's involvement in illegal supply of arms to South Sudan, where it is used to kill thousands of civilians. In 2014, Ukrinmash signed a contract with the UAE for supply of thousands of machine guns, mortars, rocket-propelled grenades and millions of rounds of ammunition to South Sudan. The participation of the Ukrainian state company in the supply of arms to South Sudan violates the arms trade treaty, of which Ukraine is a signatory," the statement said.

Pending the imposition of a UN Security Council arms embargo, Ukraine must adhere to its stated policies to promote regional and international security and stability through responsible arms transfers, the report states.

According to Amnesty International, Ukraine should immediately cease transfers of arms and any logistical assistance to the South Sudanese government, including equipment, maintenance, and training provided by its nationals.

Both Ukraine and the UAE should ratify the Arms Trade Treaty as soon as possible, Amnesty International said.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recommended that citizens of Ukraine refrain from traveling to certain regions of Sudan because of the deteriorating security situation there.
