Groysman Instructing Hrynevych, Klimkin To Consult With EU Ambassadors Regarding Language Provisions Of New Law On Education

Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman has instructed Minister of Education and Science Liliya Hrynevych and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pavlo Klimkin to consult with Ambassadors of the member countries of the European Union regarding the language provisions of the revised law On Education.

Prime Minister told this to journalists, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

Groysman stressed that Ukraine is a tolerant state and its policy complies with all obligations, in particular, those concerning human rights of national minorities.

At the same time, the Prime Minister underscored importance of upholding the state language in the entire territory of the country.

According to the revised law On Education, starting from September 2018, preschool and elementary education can be conducted in a language of a respective national minority with simultaneous teaching of the state language.

Starting from mid-school, pupils will receive education in the state language, with a language of a national minority taught in a separate discipline.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin stated that Ukraine stood to guarantee free pursuit of languages of national minorities in the future.

On September 5, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a revised version of the law On Education that envisages 12-years secondary education.
