Russian Court Sentences Crimean Tatar Mejlis Deputy Head Ciygoz To 8 Years In Prison

On September 11, a court in the Russia-annexed Crimea sentenced Crimean Tatar Mejlis' deputy head Ahtem Ciygoz to eight years in prison.

Lawyer Nikolai Polozov announced this on Twitter, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

Polozov says the court recognized Ciygoz a Ukrainian citizen.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine demanded to stop the trial of Ciygoz.

In June, a court in the Crimea extended the arrest of Ciygoz until October 8.

The Investigative Committee of Russia detained Ciygoz in early 2015 on suspicion of organizing riots.
