French Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has said that France will consider Russia's proposal to send a United Nations peacekeeping mission to Donbas.

Le Drian was speaking at a joint press conference with Russia's Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow (Russia), Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"We will carefully consider the Russian proposal to mobilize UN forces to guarantee additional security for OSCE mediators. However, I think that the ceasefire regime should continue. It is currently working positively, and it is necessary for both sides to fulfill their obligations and for everything to be done in accordance with the Minsk agreements," said Le Drian.

Lavrov said that Russia's proposal to deploy peacekeepers in Donbas was prompted mainly by the need to ensure protection of observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (OSCE SMM).

"Our proposal is that to enable OSCE observers to monitor the implementation of the Minsk Agreements in good faith and effectively, we should give them armed protection, the composition of which will be determined by the parties to the conflict - Kyiv, Donetsk, and Luhansk. These are not UN forces but a mission to facilitate protection of OSCE observers," Lavrov said.

According to him, deployment of such a mission is fully in line with the logic of the Minsk agreements.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, President Petro Poroshenko has ruled out approval of deployment of a UN peacekeeping mission that includes representatives of the self-proclaimed "Donetsk People's Republic" and "Luhansk People's Republic."

The Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Ministry believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin's statement that he supported the idea of deployment of a UN peacekeeping mission in Donbas if it was to be deployed on the line of contact is Russia's latest attempt to present its aggression as an internal conflict.

Putin said on September 5 that he supported the idea of deployment of a UN peacekeeping mission in Donbas if it was to be deployed on the line of contact.

According to him, the main function that such peacekeepers would perform was to ensure the safety of observers from the OSCE SMM, and representatives of the self-proclaimed "Donetsk People's Republic" and "Luhansk People's Republic" must agree to their deployment.
