Foreign Ministry: 115 Ukrainian Citizens Arrested/Convicted In Greece On Charges Of Smuggling Of Migrants

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine says 115 citizens of Ukraine have been arrested/convicted in Greece on charges of smuggling of migrants.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this to Ukrainian News Agency following an inquiry.

"As of August 2017 the total number of Ukrainian citizens arrested/convicted on the territory of Greece makes 144, including 115 on charges of smuggling of migrants," reads the answer.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that a person guilty of smuggling of migrants can be convicted up to 25 years in prison in Greece.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that the Greece authorities observe the rights of Ukrainian citizens during the trial, including the right for free defense.

Ukrainian citizens were provided with translation.

Ukrainian diplomats took part in every court sitting when Ukrainian citizens requested.

Ukrainian diplomats have never been denied meeting with Ukrainian citizens after their arrest.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine held 1,059 illegal migrants in January - June 2017.
