Poroshenko: EU Countries Should Buy Russian Gas At Ukraine's Eastern Border

President Petro Poroshenko states that the countries of the European Union should buy Russian natural gas at the eastern border of Ukraine.

Petro Poroshenko said this in his annual state of the nation address at the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Thursday, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"We are expected for the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce to provide its ruling upon Naftogaz of Ukraine's appeal against Gazprom. In view of the fact that the contract expires in 2019, our task is to achieve with the help of the EU revolutionary change in organization of the gas transit. Namely to let the Europeans to buy Russian gas not at the western but at the eastern border of Ukraine, and let Ukraine provide quality transit services not for Russia but for the EU," he said.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Naftogaz of Ukraine national joint stock company says it will increase claims against Gazprom at the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce regarding the gas transit contract by USD 5 billion.

The Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce ruled against Gazprom in the dispute over the "take or pay" clause in its gas contract with Naftogaz of Ukraine on May 31.

The arbitration institute also accepted Naftogaz of Ukraine's argument that the gas price under the contract with Gazprom should be reviewed and canceled the contract's clause that bans Naftogaz of Ukraine from re-exporting gas purchased from Gazprom.
