Law On Amnesty Of ATO Fighters Convicted For Minor Offences Takes Effect

The law envisaging amnesty of anti-terrorist operation (ATO) fighters convicted for minor offences took effect on September 7.

The law was published in the Holos Ukrainy newspaper of the Verkhovna Rada on September 6 and took effect on the following day, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The law shall be subject to execution by courts within three months.

The law also concerns first-offender juvenile, pregnant women, convicts with children or disabled children, disabled convicts, convicts with AIDS, tuberculosis, cancer.

The law concerns pensioners, war veterans, and veterans of the Chornobyl cleanup operation.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the law on amnesty regarding ATO fighters in July 2016.

In August 2016, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko vetoed the law and the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law with remarks of the President in December 2016.

On September 2, 2017, President Poroshenko signed the law.
