President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko says the system for reading biometric passports of Ukrainian citizens and foreigners will start functioning at the state border checkpoints on January 1, 2018.
The President announced this at a ceremony to open an administrative service center in Kharkiv on September 1, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
He says the system will enable operation of the Unified National System of Biometric Identification and Verification of Ukrainian Citizens, Foreigners and Persons without Citizenship.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the National Security and Defense Council expects rule requiring foreign citizens to enter Ukraine on biometric passports to be introduced in 2018.
