Turchynov Expects Defense Budget To Grow To At Least UAH 162.7 Billion In 2018

National Security and Defense Council Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov expects the defense budget for 2018 to increase to at least UAH 162.7 billion.

The press service of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine announced this in a statement, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The NSDC Secretary says UAH 156.4 billion of the defense budget will be financed from the general fund of the 2018 state budget and close to UAH 6.3 billion from the special fund of the state budget.

According to the statement, on Wednesday Turchynov chaired a meeting to discuss the defense budget for 2018 with First Vice Prime Minister / Minister of Economic Development and Trade Stepan Kubiv, Finance Minister Oleksandr Danyliuk, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak, leaders of the Security Service of Ukraine, the National Guard, the National Police, secret services, and other law enforcement agencies.

According to Turchynov, at least 5% of GDP will be used for the defense budget.

The meeting participants also discussed the development of the defense industry.

The statement reads that at least 0.5% of GDP will be used for introduction of newest technologies and modernization of leading enterprises of the defense industry.

The figures of the defense budget for 2018 will be considered at a meeting of the NSDC in early September.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Verkhovna Rada member Artur Herasymov, the leader of the faction of the Solidarity Bloc of Petro Poroshenko, says the bill on restoration of Ukraine's sovereignty over Donbas will be submitted to the parliament after it is endorsed by the NSDC.
