President Petro Poroshenko has instructed Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Oleksandr Turchynov and the managements of the state enterprise Yuzhny Machine-Building Plant named after A.M. Makarov Production Association (YUZHMASH, Dnipro) and the Yuzhnoye Design Bureau (Dnipro) to investigate reports of possible supply of rocket engines to North Korea.

Poroshenko announced this on Facebook, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

Poroshenko stressed that Ukraine conscientiously abides by the international agreement on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

According to him, the government should carefully investigate The New York Times' report alleging supply of rocket engines or related technologies to North Korea however absurd the allegations may be.

"Therefore, I have ordered a thorough and comprehensive investigation of the situation to be conducted urgently under the chairmanship of the secretary of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council and with the participation of the Interagency Commission on Military-Technical Cooperation Policy and Export Control, the YUZHMASH state enterprise, and the Yuzhnoye Design Bureau, A report on the outcome of the investigation should be submitted within three days," Poroshenko wrote.

According to Poroshenko, this will make it possible to accurately confirm the farfetchedness of the assumptions that Ukraine is involved in supply of rocket engines to North Korea are and localize the source and intent of this baseless report.

Poroshenko stressed that Ukraine values its reputation as a reliable partner in the area of protection and non-proliferation of rocket and space technologies.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, YUZHMASH has confirmed that it cooperates with South Korea and denied that it supplied rocket engines to North Korea.

The State Space Agency believes that the claim by Michael Elleman of the International Institute for Strategic Studies of possible involvement of the YUZHMASH in the development of missile technology in North Korea is groundless.

Citing experts, The New York Times publication recently reported that the Ukrainian plant was possibly involved in development of missile technologies by North Korea. YUZHMASH has denied this claim.

The Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council's Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov has said that Ukraine did not supply weapons or military technology to North Korea and Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman has said that he considered these claims as a provocation against Ukraine.
