EUR 15 million that was deposited as financial guarantee for proper organization of the 2017 Eurovision song contest have been frozen on demand from the international TV channel Euronews (Lyons, France).

Chairperson of the National Public Broadcasting of Ukraine (NPBU) Zurab Alasania announced this to the press, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"There emerged a third party. When we hired a law firm from Switzerland it came to the court and got documents. They read it is Euronews. This is official information," he said.

He says the decision can be challenged before July 11.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in June 2017, the National Public Broadcasting Company hired a Swiss law firm to establish the reasons for the freezing of the EUR 15 million that was deposited as financial guarantee for proper organization of the 2017 Eurovision song contest.

The notification that these funds have been blocked at the request of a third party came from the Geneva Debt Enforcement Office.

However, the name of the third person to whom the National Public Broadcasting Company owes money and the case in connection with which the funds were blocked were not disclosed.

In October 2016, the Economic Court of Kyiv ruled to recover EUR 10.591 million from the National Television Company (NTKU) payable to the international TV channel Euronews (Lyons, France).

In October 2010, NTKU and Euronews concluded an agreement on creating the Ukrainian version.

In 2014, the leaderships of the State Committee on Television and Radio Broadcasting and NTKU mounted an initiative to discontinue the relations, financially unprofitable for the Ukrainian party.
