President Petro Poroshenko has signed a Decree that anchors at legislative level obtaining of a membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization by Ukraine as a priority in domestic and foreign policies.
Press service of the President has said this in a statement, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
"President Petro Poroshenko has signed a Decree On Amendment of Certain Laws of Ukraine on Foreign Policy," the statement said.
The amendments apply to the laws On Fundamentals of National Security and On Fundamentals of Domestic and Foreign Policies.
It had been previously anchored at the legislative level that Ukraine's priorities are integration in the European political, economic and legal environment (with the purpose to become a member of the European Union), and to become part of the Euro-Atlantic safety framework.
The new Decree signed on Thursday, July 6, anchors at the legislative level that Ukraine's priority is to integrate into the Euro-Atlantic safety framework with the purpose of obtaining NATO membership.
The previous version of the law On Fundamentals of Domestic and Foreign Policies stated that Ukraine was integrating into the Euro-Atlantic safety environment in order to achieve criteria necessary for obtaining of membership in NATO.
The Decree signed off by the President repeals the previous wording of the law about criteria and states directly and unequivocally that Ukraine's goal is to deepen cooperation with NATO in order to become a member of this organization.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in February, Poroshenko announced about intention to initiate a referendum about Ukraine joining NATO.
