Cyber Police: Country Of Origin Of Petya.A Virus Unknown Yet

Serhii Demediuk, the head of the cyber police department of the National Police of Ukraine, says the department cannot say so far in which country the virus called Petya.A was created and from which country the latest cyber attack was launched.

He told this in an interview with the Focus magazine, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"We do not have data so far pointing directly to a country of origin of this cyber attack," he said.

He says, however, that the virus has been developed by Russian-speaking specialists.

He said no help had been provided by Russian authorities.

Also, Demediuk noted that the National Police of Ukraine needs more IT specialists to meet the challenges.

"In the view of the growing threats the department needs to increase the staff of highly professional IT specialists," he said.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on June 27, a number of Ukrainian banks, public and private companies reported a virus attack. The virus is called Petya.A.

On June 28, the Cabinet of Ministers said that the cyber attacks on corporate and government computer networks had been stopped.

The Cabinet of Ministers has denied a repeat cyber attack on government computer networks.

National Security and Defense Council Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov says he believes that Russia is involved in the mass cyber attacks on Ukrainian state institutions, critical infrastructure, and the banking sector.

The National Police of Ukraine estimates the damage caused by cyber crimes in 2016 at UAH 27 million.
