The Red Cross International Committee (ICRC) suggests creating safety zones around critical objects of water supply infrastructure in Donbas.
Head of the ICRC in Ukraine Alan Eshleman told this to the Dzerkalo Tyzhnia newspaper, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
"We suggest creating of safety zones around the Upper Kalmius Filtration Plant and Donetsk Filtration Plant, as well as around water pipe connected to the plants. Then, we suggest creating safety zones around key water infrastructure objects in the area Zolote - Pervomaisk, in particular, the third pumping station and water pipe going from it to Horlivka filtration plants Nos. 1 and 2, as well as in the area of Petrovskyi water in-take," Eshleman said.
Eshleman detailed that the Donetsk and Upper Kalmius Filtration Plants contain chloride in particularly large volumes, stored in special cylinders and used for water treatment.
In case the cylinders with chloride come in the range of direct fire, the cylinders might explode releasing huge blast of chloride into the air, which then will form a toxic cloud that will fall to the ground in a form of precipitation at any place.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in June the ICRC presented a plan on reconstruction of a bridge in Stanytsia Luhanska (Luhansk region) to the Trilateral Contact Group for the settlement of the situation in Donbas (Ukraine-OSCE-Russia).
