Member of Parliament Nadiya Savchenko (independent) urges President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko to veto the law adopted by the Verkhovna Rada to terminate the provisions of the legislation that equate one day of pre-trial detention to two days of actual prison sentence.

MP Savchenko posted a copy of her appeal to the President on Facebook, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

It reads that the law adopted by the Verkhovna Rada violates Article 22 of the Constitution of Ukraine as the law worsens the rights of citizens.

MP Savchenko has also posted a copy of her appeal to Ombudsperson Valeria Lutkovska. She urges the Ombudsperson to apply to the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and challenge the constitutionality of the law.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on May 18, 2017, the Verkhovna Rada terminated the provisions of the legislation that equate one day of pre-trial detention to two days of actual prison sentence.

In November 2015, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the so-called Savchenko law, which equates one day of pre-trial detention to two days of actual prison sentence.
