The regulations committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has received the decree of President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko depriving independent MP Andrii Artemenko of Ukraine's citizenship.
Maria Nekhotsa, the head of the secretariat of the parliamentary committee, announced this to Ukrainian News Agency.
She says the parliamentary committee has also received a letter from MP Andrii Artemenko that he challenges the presidential decree at a court. The MP requests the parliamentary committee not to consider the presidential decree before a ruling of the court.
Maria Nekhotsa says the parliamentary committee is likely to consider the question at its sitting on May 17.
Article 81 of the Constitution of Ukraine envisages that powers of an MP shall be terminated in case of termination of Ukraine's citizenship.
The Verkhovna Rada shall adopt a resolution to terminate powers of an MP by 226 votes.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on May 5, 2017, the State Migration Service of Ukraine confirmed that Poroshenko terminated citizenship of MP Artemenko and considers the decision legal.
On February 27, MP Artemenko confirmed that he possesses Canadian citizenship.
MP Artemenko appeals to the Higher Administrative Court asking to overturn the Presidential Decree on stripping the MP of Ukrainian citizenship.
