The Council of the European Union says the visa liberalization for Ukrainian citizens will help strengthen ties between Ukrainian people and the European Union.

The Council of the European Union announced this in a statement, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"The adoption of the regulation on visa liberalization for Ukrainian citizens is an important development, which will help strengthen ties between the people of Ukraine and the EU. It follows the completion of the necessary reforms by Ukraine in a number of areas including migration, public order and security, external relations and fundamental rights," said Carmelo Abela, Maltese Minister for Home Affairs and National Security.

The Maltese Minister notes that the revised suspension mechanism recently adopted by the EU makes it possible for the Union to suspend such liberalization, if there are serious migration or security issues with Ukraine.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on May 11, 2017, the Council of the European Union adopted a regulation on visa liberalization for Ukrainian citizens.

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko will visit Strasbourg, France, on May 17 to sign a document on provision of the visa-free regime for Ukrainians.

The decision on visa liberalization for Ukrainian citizens will take effect after its official publication.

The visa-free regime will enter into force 20 days after its publication (approximately on June 11).
