UN General Assembly Third Committee Urges Russia To Cancel Mejlis Ban

The Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) of the General Assembly of the United Nations urges Russia to reverse the ban on the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people.

On November 15, the Committee adopted the draft resolution on the human rights situation in Crimea and Sevastopol, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The purpose of the draft resolution is protection of the constitutional rights of the citizens of Ukraine in the peninsula.

By its terms, the Assembly would call upon the Russian Federation to comply with its obligations under international law, namely to cease abuses against residents of Crimea, release unlawfully detained Ukrainian citizens, hold perpetrators to account for abuses, allow journalists to work independently, permit the reopening of cultural and religious institutions, revoke the decision to declare the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people extremist and cooperate with international and European bodies on human rights.

All UNGA member-states were participating in the Committee work: representatives of 193 countries and also observers from Palestine and the Vatican.

Draft resolutions and decisions prepared and adopted in committees via consensus or voting are then sent for the final approval at the UNGA plenary sessions.

Draft resolutions adopted in the main committees are approved by the UNGA without major change and approximately with the same vote results.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Ukraine has presented the draft resolution on the human rights situation in Crimea and Sevastopol at the UNGA.

The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) records persistent persecution of dissenters in the Russia-occupied Crimea by RF authorities under the pretext of fight against extremism.
