Poroshenko: European Commission Decision To Allow Gazprom To Use Additional Opal Pipeline Capacity Violates Spirit Of Ukraine-EU Association Agreement

President Petro Poroshenko believes that the European Commission’s decision to permit the Gazprom gas company (Russia) to use an additional 30-40% of the OPAL pipeline’s capacity violates the spirit of the association agreement between Ukraine and the European Union.

The press service of the president of Ukraine announced this in a statement after a telephone conversation between Poroshenko and European Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

During the conversation, special attention was also paid to completion of the ratification of the association agreement between Ukraine and the European Union and the issue of improving the energy security in Europe.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Naftogaz of Ukraine national energy company has said that Ukraine will lose USD 320-425 million in annual income (based on the transit tariffs under the current contract) if the European Commission permits Gazprom to use an additional 30-40% of the OPAL pipeline’s capacity.
