IMF Supports NBU Independence, Opposes Interference In Its Work

The International Monetary Fund supports the independence of the National Bank of Ukraine and opposes interference in its work.

The IMF's Director of Communications Gerry Rice announced this at a news briefing.

Rice declined to comment on rumors of possible nationalization of PrivatBank, saying that it is beyond the competence of the IMF.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Parliamentary Deputy Serhii Taruta (independent) circulated a document entitled "The Threat to Ukraine's Economic Security" before a meeting of member countries of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington in October.

The document accused the National Bank of Ukraine's head Valeria Hontareva of corruption, destruction of the Ukrainian banking system, and creation of threats to Ukraine's economic security.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Association of Ukrainian Banks' Chairman Oleksandr Suhoniako and Parliamentary Deputy Serhii Taruta blamed the NBU's head Hontareva for the collapse of the banking system at a news conference on October 17.

The Parliamentary Committee on Financial Policy and Banking has recommended that President Petro Poroshenko submit a draft resolution on dismissal of Hontareva to the parliament.

Hontareva has received the support of 16 member banks of the Independent Association of Banks, the American Chamber of Commerce, and United States Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch.
