The European Union is troubled with the deterioration of the situation with freedom of the media in the Russia-occupied Crimea and in the terrorist-held territories of Donetsk and Luhansk Regions.

Ambassador Hugues Mingarelli, the Head of the EU Delegation in Ukraine, announced this at the press conference entitled “Journalists’ safety in Ukraine. Stopping the impunity,” Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The EU is determined to defend freedom of the media jointly with the Ukrainian society and its institutes, but the authorities must conduct efficient and quick investigations in the cases of attacks on journalists.

The Head of the Delegation stressed that Ukrainian authorities must seriously address the issue of publishing journalists’ personal details on such websites as Peacekeeper, which breaks the laws on the protection of personal data of citizens of Ukraine.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Council of Europe registered 13 alerts of infringement of journalists’ rights in Ukraine in the first nine months of 2016.
