Foreign Ministry To Send Protest Note To Russia Over Refusal To Transfer Ukrainian Film Director Sentsov To Ukraine

Russia, Ukraine, court, prison, Sentsov, film director, Oleh Sentsov

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs intends to send a protest note to Russia in connection with its refusal to transfer Ukrainian film director Oleh Sentsov to Ukraine following his sentencing to 20 years in prison by a Russian court.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokeswoman Mariana Betsa announced this on the "112 Ukraina" television channel, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

According to Betsa, only political and informational pressure, as well as mobilization of international efforts and consolidation of Ukraine’s partners, could facilitate release of political prisoners.

She also stressed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would take the necessary political and diplomatic steps to free Sentsov.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Russia has refused to transfer Sentsov to Ukraine.

Russia has said that his transfer to Ukraine is impossible because he is a resident of Crimea and therefore automatically a citizen of Russia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has noted the fact that Russia’s Human Rights Commissioner Tatyana Moskalkova has said that Sentsov does not have Russian citizenship.
