The Union of Journalists of Russia requests the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation to provide detailed explanations regarding arrest of Ukrainian journalist Roman Suschenko of the Ukrinform national news agency.

The press service of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine announced this in a statement citing a letter of the Union of Journalists of Russia to the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"The chairperson of the Union of Journalists of Russia Vsevolod Bogdanov has sent a letter to FSB director Alexander Bortnikov with a request to provide detailed explanations regarding the arrest of Ukrinform journalist Suschenko in Moscow," reads the statement.

The statement reads that the Union of Journalists of Russia sent the letter following appeals from the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine and the International Federation of Journalists.

The Union of Journalists of Russia is extremely concerned with the situation and continues to follower the developments.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine recommends that Ukrainian journalists refrain from trips to the Russian Federation.

The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine calls absurd allegations that Suschenko is engaged in espionage.

The Committee to Protect Journalists, an international non-government organization, has called on the Russian authorities to conduct a public investigation in the case of Ukrainian journalist Roman Suschenko of the Ukrinform national news agency arrested in the Russian Federation for espionage
