Russia intends to allow Ukrainian consuls to visit the Ukrinform national information agency’s detained journalist Roman Suschenko next week (October 10-16).

President Petro Poroshenko announced this on his Facebook page, Ukrainian News reports.

"Foreign Affairs Minister Pavlo Klimkin has just informed me that Ukrainian diplomats have secured access to our journalist Roman Suschenko – next week," said Poroshenko.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Parliament Speaker Andrii Parubyi believes that the Prosecutor-General’s Office should open criminal proceedings on suspicion of hostage taking in connection with the detention of journalist Suschenko in Russia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has handed a note of protest to Russia's consul over the hampering of Ukrainian consuls' access to Ukrainian journalist Roman Suschenko detained in the Russian Federation.

The Federal Security Service of Russia suspects Suschenko of espionage and considers him an employee of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s Main Intelligence Directorate.

Ukrinform considers the detention of Suschenko in Russia as a provocation.
